Original members of the Brisbane Greeters say they have been cut out of the consultation process as the council announces that volunteers would be back on city streets by December 11.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schinner, who is self-isolating after a trip to COVID-19 hotspot Adelaide, told ABC Radio Brisbane the program and its more than 100 volunteers would be "a great Christmas present for Brisbane".

"They've had the program on pause since earlier this year, but we're keen to get it up and running before the end of the year," he said.

"It's a great program as people start gearing up and getting back into the city.

"We're getting visitors from other parts of Queensland, and hopefully other parts of Australia that are safe to come in."

One of the original greeters, Alison Muirhead, has been volunteering for almost nine years and said she could not wait to get back to it.

"There's a glimmer of hope on the horizon, wrapped up in big bow for Christmas," Ms Muirhead said.

Acting Mayor Krista Adams made the announcement on Tuesday morning and said the volunteers would help bring life back into the city.

"As council reboots this program we will restart the delivery of the free CBD tours and also look to extend the program into suburban areas next year," she said.

"The greeter program will play a critical role in the city's economic recovery by helping to promote our city and its many attractions.

"Our volunteer greeters are so incredibly valued by the entire city and I look forward to welcoming them back and into the Brisbane City Council family with open arms.

"Their fresh start will also mean a fresh new look … with a new royal blue uniform."

However, the relaunch has rubbed some volunteers the wrong way, with many saying they were not notified of the event.

"There's been a group of us who have been lobbying for the greeters to come back. None of those people are here in the new uniform this morning," Ms Muirhead said.

"There's 150 of us who have given our time freely as volunteers.

"I would have thought that maybe, just maybe, we would have consulted about what was happening."

Brisbane City Council emailed volunteers on Tuesday morning notifying them the program would recommence in December.
